First of all, thank you to Yelp and Yelp Charlotte for caring enough about building community, philanthropy, and entrepreneurship to incorporate all three into a tastemaker social in true Gatsby style. Thanks to the Lyft coupon because I was able to indulge like a true, enthusiastic partygoer.
Secondly, Yelp's Charlotte Nikki W. coordinated this benefit on behalf Behailu Academy, a non-profit organization that empowers youth to find and use their voices through the arts, academic support, and community service. Simply put, kids need art, so I find this org and ones like it important. Every kid is talented and has purpose; therefore, they should be provided much opportunity to explore all of their talents, in the arts or otherwise, so that they can grow up to be self-sufficient, well-rounded adults. Reportedly, on this day, Yelp Charlotte has raised over $12k, so this was a successful event.
This is the same message that I drive home to our youth at my speaking engagements. See earlier posts.
Moreover, I am a byproduct of all the art classes in which I participated as a young person: culinary arts; home economics; Art I, II & III, black & white photography, fashion design and much more. That’s why this website exists in the first place. An interest in the arts typically begins at school age and facilitates visual and auditory learning. Remember when you created letters and numbers with uncooked macaroni in grade school? Edible art!
Lastly, the reason why you’re here, the rundown on the food and drinks at Yelp Goes Gatsby. I have highlights. Here’s a no-brainer list of the Best Bites & Drinks I experienced while there:
The Cellar at Duckworth’s macaroni and cheese was creamy and cheesy and had bits of fried bacon in it. It was well seasoned and moist (none of that dry stuff), and it tastes amazing. I had seconds and thirds. No apologies. Cellar’s macaroni and cheese challenges Jack Beagle’s Jack Cheese with every bite. Yum.
Doc Porter’s Distillery: Had the best punch, hands down. I topped mine with Doc Porter’s Bourbon. Everything’s better with Bourbon. You should’ve known that already!
Coastal: Dammit those pretzel bites swirled around in chutney and drunken goat cheese fondue was the best bite I enjoyed at Yelp Goes Gatsby. I had a number of plates (Greedy!). I was at Coastal’s station so much that I made conversation with a few of its charming attendants.
Brio: Brio’s Ravioli is delicious. Shout out to Sous Chef Ashley.
Howl at the Moon’s: Sex on the Moon cocktail.
Taco’s 4 Life: Popular taco station at YGG. The tacos were spicy AF and the best there!
